It is one of the finest water-bird sanctuaries in the world, where several indigenous bird species and migratory fowl, some from as far away as Siberia, come annually during winter to rest & breed. The 28.73 sq. Km. Lake and wetland was artificially created by the Maharaja of Bharatpur in the 19th century. In a few years, the new wetland surrounded by marginal forests was able to support thousands of water bodies. It is recognized as a ‘World Heritage Site’ by UNESCO in the year 1985. Over 300 species of birds are found here. Pythons, wild boars, spotted deer’s are also native to this bird park. A quiet ride by boat in the early hours of the morning is also an unforgettable experience.
Vehicles are only permitted up to Shanti Kutir inside the park. The Electra Van of forest department can be engaged in the sanctuary , although the best way to explore the park is on foot or bicycles which are available on hire. Cycle rickshaws can also be hired.
