The Kingdom of the Bharatpur was carved out by the legendary Jat warriors, Badan Singhand Suraj Mal.Under their leadership the territory of Bharatpur expanded far beyond the original boundaries of the town of Bharatpur and the region became one of the power centers for Jat community. The 3500 years old history of Bharatpur is a saga of power struggles. The vivacity & the vitality of the Jats made Bharatpur an important episode in the history of Rajasthan. Such was the might of the Jats that Bharatpur came to be known as impregnable city. The forces of the Bharatpur were the only ones which fought successfully against the British. The palaces & forts built by the Jat rulers are now major tourist attractions.
   

Set amidst the extensive 50 acres, the Laxmi Vilas Palace was built in 1887 for Raja Ragunath Singh, the younger brother of the then Bharatpur ruler, Maharaja Ram Singh. The palace was earlier called Raghunath Niwas later in 1994 the Palace was converted into a hotel now famous as Laxmi Vilas Palace. Bharatpur Palaces have played host to such dignitaries as the Duke of Edinburgh, Shah of Iran, King of Nepal & Shah of Afghan and has been a prime witness to, and a participant in almost every eventful experience that took place in the princely state of Bharatpur, be it -royal weddings, affairs of the court or Royal duck shoots.
